Building Blocks: All About Precut Fabric from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Precut fabric saves time and effort when creating quilting projects.

Precut fabric revolutionized the quilting world. The quilting skill was historically passed down through teaching – one would learn the intricate and mathematical approach of measuring and cutting fabric by hand from the generation that came before. The margin for error was extraordinary, a single miscalculation could jeopardize an entire quilting project.

Quilting is now easier and more ...

But, early in his career, he started to experiment—and that’s how he became one of the most famous artists of all time. Picasso said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

I met a young quilter whose mother was diagnosed with cancer. Right away, this sweet daughter began to put together a special “chemo quilt.” Each of the kids and grandkids contributed a block. The quilt was completed the day before the first treatment, and this brave grandmother was able to face her new journey wrapped in the love of her family.

Next Up baby quilt featuring charming farm fabric from Carried Away Quilting

When I saw Stacy Iest Hsu’s newest fabric collection, On the Farm, I just had to sew up a baby quilt. The fabric is darling, with vibrant colors and charming farmyard scenes. In keeping with the country theme, I paired this collection with Moda’s Indigo Chambray and decided to use my Next Up charm pack pattern. The result is a cheerful baby quilt that is gender neutral and hay bales of fun.

Making children’s quilts is so rewarding. For me, they bring back special memories of my kids when they were little. This particular quilt reminds me ...

A patriotic Picking Petals by Sweet Treasures Quilts from Carried Away Quilting

Please excuse the horn tootin’ going on over here, but I’m quite proud of my pattern Picking Petals. This was one of the first patterns I released when my business was new, and over the years she’s been stitched up by thousands of quilters in a variety of colorways and themes. It’s a quick little quilt to sew, and the results are always lovely. Recently the folks at Sweet Treasures Quilts sewed up a patriotic version, which is sophisticated and striking!

Patriotic sample photos courtesy of Sweet Treasures Quilts.

A sunny Flower Tile quilt block from Carried Away Quilting

Last night I was feeling blue. I was missing my quilting buddies and reminiscing about the fun we have when we sew together . . . giggling, talking, snacking, creating. For a moment, I considered throwing myself on the couch and binge watching Netflix. But instead, I picked up my chin and sought refuge in the sewing room. I’m so glad I did, because by the end of the evening I had cheered myself considerably by making this happy block!

Do you remember my Flower Tile pattern? I released it in 2018 and it has always been a personal favorite of mine ...

Warm in the winter from Celtic Thistle Stitches

At this time of year nothing beats starting the day with a warming bowl of porridge, but getting that hot bowl from microwave to table has always been a juggling act of tea towels or oven mitts to avoid scorched fingers.

No longer!

I decided that my first make of the year would be just for me and as I had been looking at the bowl cosy patterns proliferating the Internet I knew just what that make would be :)

As I don't always use the same bowl for breakfast I made two bowl cosies, the bottom one is made ...

Maple Leaf Blocks from Jan's Quilts

These are for my Modern Quilt Guilds' Block of the Month Charity Quilt project.  Each month a different member chooses a block to present.  Once enough blocks are collected, we assemble them into large lap-size quilts to donate to a local charity.

This month's tutorial can be found here.  Rather than use yardage, I had this great Charm Pack that I thought would work perfectly.  I had to improvise a bit, but I think the Maple Leaves turned out great.

May your bobbins always be full,

Making a Patchwork Drawstring Bag from Sew Paint It

I made a drawstring bag out of patchwork for my daughter.  She loves everything that is cute.
The fabric was a charm pack from Riley Blake called Snapshots.  A charm pack is a number, in this case 32, of coordinating fabrics in squares which are 5" x 5".  I cut them into quarters giving me 4 squares of each fabric which were 2.5".  I then arranged them and sewed them together to make 6 squares wide and 7 squares high.

I then quilted it with a pink fabric on the reverse and quilted 0.25" from each side of ...
